O BTO American Railroads VISION GG1 #4902
To help celebrate the centennial of America’s first transcontinental railroad, Ross Rowland’s High Iron
Company laid out an ambitious New York City – Ogden special. The “Golden Spike Centennial Limited,”
often known simply as “the blue train” was a sight to behold. Fourteen cars in total, the train included
three exhibit cars, coaches, twin-unit diner, dome and open air cars and an observation. The display
cars paid tribute to all of America’s railroad past, present and future and were opened to the public at 13
stops along the trip. Over the course of its journey, the train was pulled by GG1 4902 and Nickel Plate 759,
also painted in matching paint, and Union Pacific 844. 100 passengers paid the full fare for the entire trip.
Many more, including John Wayne, rode smaller segments.
