The car body is based on MTH’s 40′ Steel Sided Reefer Car. Famedrailroad historian John H. White referred to reefers as “themost conservative of all American freight cars,” as reefersretained wood frames and sides long after other types of cars hadconverted to steel construction. Steel-sided reefers like this Premiermodel became common only after 1940, and many wood reefers ran wellinto the 1960s. Mechanical reefers, with self-powered refrigerationunits in each car, became the norm in the second half of the 20thcentury, and the practice of stopping a train to re-ice during shipmentgradually disappeared.
