Railroads seemed to have a love-hate relationship with the USRA Heavy
Mikado. Some received the locomotives and sold them off within a few years.
Others found them to be just what they needed and ordered copies by
the dozens. Overall, the type served well on the roads that embraced them,
often maintaining heavy freight duties until the end of steam.
Reappearing in the Lionel catalog for the first time in nine years, our “Heavy
Mikes” are back in some popular old and new road names. This will be the
first issue of these locomotives with Bluetooth and all of the latest LEGACY
upgrades. We’ve also added some new road-specific details to our Great
Northern and Soo Line versions to better capture the prototypes. The heavy
Mikado has all the heft of a big locomotive with a friendly footprint for tighter
curves and small layouts.
